Photo-etched pins are modern-day cloisonné pins. The design is acid-etched into the metal using a photographic technique. The resulting relief is then filled with individual colors of soft enamel paint. There must be metal between each color in this type of pin.

Gold metal photo etched pins are very traditional in appearance. The gold is more suitable for jewelry-like applications, such as corporate pins or coins.

A clear epoxy coating can be added to the pin to protect it.
